Distances are routed driving estimates from Old Town's center to each kennel's street address; your exact time will vary a few minutes depending on where in town you start.

About Old Town

Old Town sits on Marsh Island, bounded by the Penobscot River to the east and the Stillwater River to the west, with a population of 7,431 at the 2020 census. The city grew up around lumber milling and water power on the river — Old Town Canoe, founded there in 1898, is still the best-known name tied to that history — and Pushaw Lake, a popular boating and fishing lake, lies just to the west of town.

The Penobscot Nation's Indian Island reservation sits within the city's limits in the Penobscot River, home to the largest historic Penobscot village before English settlement. It's a sovereign tribal community, not a public park, so it isn't listed below as a dog-walking destination — but it's part of what makes Old Town's geography and history distinct from the other towns on this page.

Sewall Park, on Perch Pond (formerly known as Mud Pond), is a smaller in-town green space worth knowing about, though we couldn't find a published dog or leash policy for it to quote accurately here.

Industry is still part of Old Town's identity, too: the city is home to a paper mill owned by Nine Dragons Paper Holdings, though rising electricity and wood-fiber costs forced a shutdown in 2023 — a reminder that the mill-town economy here has had a harder few years than the lumber-era history might suggest.

Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails Near Old Town

Good exercise before or after a stay. Pet rules can change, so always check current signage before you go.

Hirundo Wildlife Refuge

A 2,460-acre wildlife refuge spanning Old Town and neighboring Alton, run as a "living laboratory" and research facility affiliated with the University of Maine since 1965, with trails through varied habitat and interpretive panels on nature and history. It's one of the larger protected tracts anywhere near Greater Bangor.

Dogs: NOT allowed, per the trail guide's published pet policy for the refuge — Hirundo's own rules page doesn't spell this out directly, so call ahead if you want it confirmed first-hand.

Maine Winters & Planning Ahead

Being the farthest town on this page from both kennels, Old Town families feel Maine winter driving the most. Bangor International Airport averages about 74.6 inches of snow a year — a regional figure that applies to every town on this page, since all are within about 25 minutes of that station. Route 2/Stillwater Avenue between Old Town and Bangor can run slower than the mileage suggests after a storm, so plan extra time for drop-off and pickup from November through April, and book the Christmas and February vacation weeks well ahead — the longer drive makes a surprise "we're full" much more disruptive to a trip than it would be for a closer town.
