About Hermon
Hermon is one of the fastest-growing towns in this group: its population jumped 19.3%, from 5,416 to 6,461, between the 2010 and 2020 census counts, as new subdivisions filled in west of Bangor. At about 176 people per square mile, it's still far less dense than Brewer or Veazie.
The town is dotted with small ponds — Hermon Pond at 462 acres, Tracy Pond at 47 acres and George Pond at 49 acres — drained toward the Penobscot by the Souadabscook and Wheeler Streams. It's also home to Hermon Mountain, a small local ski and snow-tubing hill, and the Ecotat Garden and Arboretum, a cultivated garden with forested trails behind it.
Hermon High School and Hermon Middle School, home of the Hermon Hawks, anchor the town's community life, which fits a town that's grown mostly through young families moving in over the last decade rather than through any single large employer or commercial center.
Despite that growth, Hermon still reads as a low-density, spread-out town rather than a dense suburb — new subdivisions have filled in around the existing ponds and woods without creating anything like a traditional town center.
Hermon covers 35.87 square miles of land, which is a lot of room for a town of its population — part of why newer subdivisions have had space to spread out around the ponds rather than infill a tighter existing grid.
Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails Near Hermon
Good exercise before or after a stay. Pet rules can change, so always check current signage before you go.
Hermon Recreation Trail
A flat, wide, easy 0.9-mile (one-way) path linking Hermon's elementary and high schools — the kind of local trail used mostly by residents for a short walk or run rather than a destination hike.
Dogs: no published policy found — we'd rather say that than guess, so check current signage before bringing one along.
Ecotat Garden and Arboretum
Cultivated gardens with forested trails behind them — more of a quiet stroll-and-look spot than a long hike, but a pleasant one if you have twenty minutes before or after a drop-off.
Dogs: no published policy found either — same caveat applies.
Maine Winters & Planning Ahead
Hermon Mountain's own existence says something about the local winters: this part of Penobscot County gets enough reliable snow to run a ski hill, and Bangor International Airport averages about 74.6 inches of snow a year — a regional figure that applies to every town on this page, since all are within about 25 minutes of that station. If you're boarding during ski season, build extra time into drop-off for slower driving on Route 2, and book the Christmas and February vacation weeks early — Hermon's own growth means more households than ever are making that same drive each winter.
